When I met someone without make-up, they asked if I am doing the corset-free movement*, whether I’m a feminist, and put pressure onto me to put makeup on and decorate myself better.

*The corset-free movement is a feminist movement in Korea which resists following the traditional features expected from ‘women’ like having long hair, putting on make-up and wearing high-heels. These features are a way of sexual objectification and suppression reinforced through society.

집, 남성 자매와 모부로 부터 너는 저런 것(페미니즘)하지 않는 게 안전하지 않겠나는 권고를 들음. 학교, 뒷자리에 앉은 남학생으로부터 페미니스트에 관한 멸칭, 메갈, 웜련이라는 단어를 들으며 조롱을 지속적으로 들음. 직장, 남성 상사로부터 페미니즘적 컨텐츠(영화)를 봤는지, 어떻게 느꼈는지, 설명해야만 하는 상황을 강요받음. 친목모임, 그냥 대놓고 혹시 그쪽(페미니즘, 여성주의) 성향이냐고 질문함.

At home, my brother and parents exhorted me not to do ‘such a thing’ to be safe.

At school, I was constantly mocked by a male classmate sitting behind me, with internet terms that degrade feminists.

At work, I was forced by a male colleague to explain whether I watched any feminism content (like movies) and to tell him what I felt.

At friendship meet-ups, people asked me straight whether I am ‘that side’ (feminist).

밤 길거리 걷기 무섭다고 했더니 자기는 남성우월주의자 라고 장난스럽게 말하고 남자도 밤 길거리 무섭다고 하며 너 페미니스트냐? 요즘 이상한 거 많이 봤네 라고 계속 추궁했습니다.

When I said that I feel scared to walk alone at night, the person said that they are a male chauvinist jokingly and interrogated whether I am a feminist too, saying you’ve been watching some weird stuff a lot lately.

온라인 게임을 즐겨하는 사람으로서 음성을 켜거나 게임을 잘 하지 못 한 경우 너 여자냐 여자라서 지는거다같은 말을 듣게 되고 그에 대해 반박하면 페미냐고 시비조로 묻고는 했음.

As a person who likes online games, whenever I turned on the mic or wasn’t doing good in the game play, I would hear things like “are you a girl? That’s why you are losing.” When I refute, I would hear additional aggressions asking if I’m a feminist.

In a job interview I was asked in details about the feminist content I wrote in my application, with the straight atmosphere of not liking the fact.

직접적으로 검열 당해본 적은 없어요. 일단 제가 드러내본 적이 없고, 페미니즘에 대한 논의를 페미니즘 무리 외에서는 해본 적이 없기 때문입니다. 그냥 애초에 여지를 안주고 피하는 거죠.

I’ve never been censored officially because I never express that I’m a feminist or discussed about feminist issues with groups other than feminist groups. I just never give them room to censor me and avoid such happenings.

영화 <82년생 김지영> 개봉당시 남초회사 직장동료끼리 희화하는 농담을 경험한 후 페미니즘에 적대적인 정서를 공유한다는 것을 체감하였습니다.

When the movie Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982* was released I’ve experienced that male colleagues share a hostile view of feminism through hearing them making fun of the movie.

*Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 is a Korean movie from a fiction novel written by Cho Nam-Joo. The story-line centers on a housewife who becomes a stay-at-home mother and later suffers from depression. It focuses on the everyday sexism the title character experiences from youth.

들어가고 싶었던 아티스트 커뮤니티에 면접을 보러 간 일이 있었다. 면접은 작품 위주의 커뮤니케이션이 주를 이룰 줄 알았는데, 개인적인 성향, 여대를 다니는 목적, 여대출신이라고 몸쓰는 일 (설치작업) 빼주지 않는다는 어불성설 (작업의 중요한 부분을 차지하는 것이 설치 디스플레이인데 누가 몸쓰기 싫다고 다른사람한테 맡기겠는가^^), 마지막으로 페미니즘 이슈에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는 지를 물었다. 나는 상당한 압박으로 느껴졌지만, 이런 질문들을 받으면서 나야말로 이 커뮤니티에 들어가고 싶어지지 않았기때문에, 솔직하게 나는 페미니스트고 그 방향이 옳다고 생각한다고 말했다. 그러자 작품제작을 할때는 그런 정치적인 내용을 담지 말라했다.

I once had an interview to get into an artist community. I thought the interview would be mainly about my works, but what was discussed was my purpose of going to an all womens’ university, my personal tendencies (in terms of feminism), saying that they won’t give mercy because I’m from a woman's university doing installation where I have to use my body a lot (I mean who would want to make other people do the installation which would be the main part of my projects^^) , and lastly what I think about feminist issues. I felt a lot of pressure through these questions, and didn’t want to be part of that community myself being asked these questions; so I replied honestly that I am a feminist and think feminism is right. The reply I got was that I shouldn’t make those kinds of political works when I make works in the community.

'불편하다'라는 말이 주로 여성들이 여성혐오를 인지했을 때 자주 하는 말인데, 조롱하듯이 "나 불편해~"라고 장난스럽게 말하는 상황을 많이 봤습니다. 또 미투를 가지고도 개그를 삼아 장난을 치며 여대라는 이유로 "어..혹시..?"라는 식의 발언을 직간접적으로 많이 들어봤습니다.

‘I feel uncomfortable’ is a phrase a lot of women use when they perceive misogynistic incidents, but I’ve heard a lot of degrading moments of anti-feminists mimicking this into situations with no context. They also do this with the MeToo movement, with the word itself, and I was also frequently asked directly/indirectly  “Are you also…(a feminist)?” jokingly from people when I said that I’m from a women’s university.

I was sexually harassed. The person who harassed me said they will tell others that I’m a feminist if I refuse.

1. 뭐씨는 왜 화장 안해? 혹시 뭐 그런 거 해? 젊을때 꾸며야지 후회하잖아요. 그리고 아닌 거 아는데 메갈같다고 함. 2. 회식에서 어떤 사람이 꾸준히 여성주의 논제로 헛소리하며 나에게 집중적으로 의견을 물어보며 사상검증을 시도하며 시비턺.

1. Why don’t you put any makeup on? Do you also do that stuff? (feminism) You have to polish yourself when you are young, you’ll regret it. And I know that you are not, but you look like a Megal*. 2. At a get-together, one colleague kept on saying nonsense about women’s rights agendas and tried to censor my thoughts by asking my opinions continuously.

*Megal is a word originated from a radical feminist website named Megalia, also used as a noun to express hatred towards feminist.

질문 많이당하고 시비걸리고 힘듭니다...일해야하는데 1시간동안 페미니즘에대한 질문받느라 1시간이 날아갔다.

I get asked a lot of questions from people who try to pick fights, it’s exhausting... I had to work but couldn’t for an hour, being asked censoring questions about feminism.

A few days ago a person I know was asked whether they are a feminist and replied that she doesn’t know; because she didn’t know how to define feminists and that she doesn’t know enough to say so. The society also views feminist as ‘violent’ so was hard to say so. Hearing this made me wonder what I was so ‘violent’ about, it’s not like I carried around scissors and cut people’s hair...

Recently my female colleague who doesn’t want to get married experienced her boss say “you’ll become a feminist if you do that”. That boss was somebody who was proud of the fact he had a girlfriend 15 years his junior and visited prostitutes.

면접 시 사상검증 질문 받음, 왜 머리가 짧은지 궁금해하면서 이에 대해 부정적으로 이야기함.

I was censored about my thoughts during a job interview, they were curious why my hair is short and talked negatively about it.

동기끼리 싸워서 사이가 멀어진 사람에게 "페미니스트인가?" 라며 마치 페미라서 본인에게 해를 입힌 것처럼 말하거나, 대뜸 머리가 짧은 나에게 "너 주변에 페미니스트 있어?" , "우리 과에 페미들 있으면 (본인들도 마주치기 싫으니) 지네가 알아서 걸러줬으면 좋겠다" 라며 돌려말하는 척 사상검증을 한 적이 있다.

To a classmate who became distant to the rest of the group after arguments, people said “Is she a feminist?” as if the reason she caused harm was because she was a feminist. To me who has short hair, they will ask out of context something like, “Do you know any feminists? If there are feminists in our course, we don’t want to confront them so I hope they would just avoid us” and try to assess whether I am one in a subtle way.

직장에서 페미니스트를 잘라야 한다고 말하거나, 누구는 페미끼가 있다고 욕하며 직장내 따돌림하는 것을 봐서 나도 숨겨야했다.

At work I saw people say they should fire feminists, or talk in the back about people who seem like feminists, ostracising them from the group so I had to hide that I was a feminist myself.

학교에서도 여성 교수님이 교과서에 나온 성적 차이에 대해 이야기를 했을 뿐인데 (남성 교수님도 가르친 내용으로 전혀 성차별적인 내용이 아닌 연구결과 소개) 학과 구성원 전원에게 페미를 박멸해야 한다며 악성 이메일을 여러차례 돌린 학생이 있다. 해당 조교수가 성범죄를 저질렀기에 해고해야 한다는 식으로 작성한 악성 이메일이었다.

At uni a female professor explained about sexual differences written in the textbook (same thing a male professor also explained, it was just introducing a case study) and a vicious email saying that feminists should be eradicated was sent multiple times to everyone in the course. It stated that the female professor committed a sexual assault so should be fired.

직장에서 투블럭을 했더니 주변에 워마드 같은거 하는 사람이 있냐는 둥 돌려서 말하는 질문을 받은 적 있음.

At work I cut my hair short and was asked if there are people from Womad* around me.

*Womad is a radical feminist website.

여성이 받는 사회적 차별에 대한 글을 sns에 올리자마자 팔로워 수가 급격히 하락했다. 그 중에는 내 오랜 절친도 포함되어 있었다.

As soon as I posted a text about the social discrimination women get, followers on my social media decreased dramatically. A good friend I knew for a long time also left.

주변에 교사로 재직중인 지인들이 많다. 요즘은 실제로 젊고, 여성인 교사들에게 남학생들이 주로 사상 검증을 위한 질문을 던진다고 한다. 예를 들어, 선생님, 선생님은 왜 머리 안기르세요? 선생님은 군대 왜 안가세요? 등등. 이로 인해 교사들은 자신의 신념과 안전 사이에서 많은 고민을 하고 있는 상황이다.

I have a lot of people working as teachers around me. These days teenage boys try to censor their thoughts to female teachers. For example, they will ask things like; Why wouldn't you grow your hair? Why don’t you join the army? etc. Because of this a lot of female teachers agonise over their safety and expressing their beliefs.

페미니즘 관련한 뉴스를 가지고 대화를 시도하려던 남성이 있었다. 발화의도가 나의 의견을 묻는 것이 아닌 피미니스트인지 확인함을 위해서였기때문에 매우 불쾌했다.

There was a guy who tried to talk to me about news related to feminism. The point of the conversation wasn’t asking my opinion but to check up whether I am a feminist or not. It was very unpleasant.

다같이 얘기를 하던 도중 ‘아아 ㅇㅇ이는 페미니스트니까 이따가 따로 얘기하자’라며 모두에게 페미니스트인걸 밝히고 따돌림을 당했다.

I was excluded from the group while chatting, they said “oh, she is a feminist so we can talk about the issue later separately” to show everyone else that I am a feminist.

취업 당시 자소서 내용을 기반으로 관련 질문을 여러차례 받음.

When I was job hunting I was asked multiple questions trying to censor my thoughts based on my applications.

사람 소개받는 자리에서 갑자기 중간중간 뜬금없이 이상한 질문들을 하길래 나중에 친구한테 웃기지않냐고 물어보니까,, 무슨 인터넷 떠도는 페미니스트 검열 질문이라나..ㅠ

I was introduced to this person and they asked weird questions while we were talking. Later I told my friend about this and said how weird it is... and was told that it is a ‘list to censor feminists’ you can find on the net.

직장에서 한참 n 번방 사건에 대한 이야기를 나누고 있었음. 나도 텔레그램이 있엇는데 거기서 몇 명의 남자애들이 탈퇴한걸 발견했고, ‘남자애들 몇 명 중에 탈퇴를 한 애들이 있다 그래서 혹시 n번방 때문일까봐 정말 역겹다’, 라고 이야기를 하고 있었는데 어떤 여자 상사가 ‘그런거 신경쓰고 짚어내는 사람들 페미니스트 아니예요?’ 라는 말을 들었음.

At work we were talking about the Nth room case*. I also had Telegram, and I spotted a few guys dropped out. I said “Some of the guys I know dropped out of Telegram, I’m disgusted whether it’ll be because of the Nth room.” and a female boss said “Aren’t people who point those things out something like feminists?”

*Nth room case is a criminal case involving blackmail, cybersex trafficking, and the spread of sexually exploitative videos via the Telegram app between 2018 and 2020 in South Korea. A man nicknamed 'god god' (Korean: 갓갓) sold sexual exploitation videos on Telegram channels and groups.

소개팅같은데서 남자들이 혹시 페미니즘 관심 있냐고?묻길래 당연한 걸 왜 묻냐고 하면 ‘아..저 한 발짝 물러설게요’ 이러던데요 ㅋㅋㅋ.

On a blind date guys asked me whether I’m interested in feminism. When I replied why ask such an obvious thing, they would say “ah.. I’ll take a step away from you” lol.
